As the ball starts to drop and the countdown begins, the rush of memories flood the heads of so many people watching. They stop and think, “What a good year 2017 has been” or “What will I do to make 2018 even better than 2017?” This is a time spent with friends and family as they all bring in the New Year together. People always look back and remember the good and the bad, getting sentimental about seeing the good pass by and motivated to forget the bad and turn those obstacles into opportunities in the New Year. As 2017 has come and gone, we now welcome 2018 with open arms. Embracing the turn of the New Year, re-focusing and challenging ourselves to make 2018 just as good, if not better, than 2017. To get you guys excited for the year ahead, we have compiled a list of 12 events, one for every month of the year, in order to get you guys thinking that the best is yet to come. So take out your new 2018 calendar, uncap that pen, sharpen that pencil and get ready to mark down some special dates for the coming years, courtesy of yours truly over at McIntosh!
January: Another Eclipse!
You all remember the last second rush to get those protective eclipse glasses for the solar eclipse in 2017? If not no worries, we got you covered with a blog to refresh your memory right here. But, if you sadly missed that moment in time where there was total darkness in some parts of the world and you are into seeing the moon turn different colors then fear not, this month there will be another total eclipse, only this time it is going to be a Lunar Eclipse! On January 31, 2018 the moon is going to turn a fiery red color as it passes within the shadow of the Earth. Will this be as exciting and chaotic as the Solar Eclipse from this summer? Hard to say, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting together with friends and take a few pictures of the moon as it changes color. This time it should be a little bit more safe to look at!
Every four years, countries from across the globe travel to a specific country, where they look to compete against each other in the Olympic Games. This year in PyeongChang, South Korea countries will be competing in various events throughout the course of two weeks in February. Each country looking to have at least one representative make their home country proud as the gold medal is placed around their neck. Some are more competitive than others, but in a time where the world seems like such a divided and corrupt place, the Olympics are a time where countries look to set aside those differences for two weeks, leaving politics behind, and compete on the floor of their respected sport. Events like the Olympics unite nations, reminding them that they all share something in common and no matter what, differences can be set aside in order for competition to be enjoyed.
March: Frozen Comes To Broadway!
With this weather, I bet people are sick of building snowmen. Something I’m sure people won’t get sick of is hearing Olaf and the cast of Frozen on Broadway! The popular Disney movie is making its way to the broadway stage in the beginning of March and tickets are already going on sale. The broadway play will be told in two acts, with expansion on storylines and characters, along with new songs and materials from the creators of the film. Snow in March is never something to celebrate, but entering into another world that Disney has once again created will make viewers forget about how much they dislike the snow, and maybe even have them leaving as they sing songs about building snowmen!
April: Celebrate The Trees on Arbor Day
On April 27th, 2018 we will be celebrating Arbor Day. Arbor day, for those of you who are wondering is a day of celebration for the trees that cover the floor of the world’s landscape. We celebrate the importance of the trees, not only their ability to provide shelter or their stabilization for the ground, but also for their beauty in nature’s landscape. President Richard Nixon declared that Arbor Day be a federal holiday during his time in office after Arbor Day had been celebrated since April 10th, 1872. In our business, we would be nothing without the trees that coat the ground with protection. So on this day, we here at McIntosh will celebrate Arbor Day a little more than everyone else, as we recognize the trees around the world and their importance to our business.
May: Another Member Is Added To The Royal Family
Throughout the world, the Royal Family is adored. When Prince Harry and America’s own Meghan Markle announced that they were ready to tie the knot in May, everyone marked their calendar. Everyone stopped to watch when Prince William and Duchess Catherine were married in 2011, I would bet that this long awaited marriage of Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will yield the same response from the people. In May another member will be added to the Royal Family and the world will all be watching.
June: The World Cup (Without The USA)
I know I know, USA isn’t going to the World Cup this year, but just because you aren’t invited to something doesn’t mean you can’t still watch right? We weren’t invited to the President’s Inauguration, but we still watched the ceremony. Just like the Olympics, the World Cup only comes around every four years. This is another opportunity for you to get together with friends, have a party, watch some soccer and show the world that even though we didn’t make the cut this time around, we are still showing love to a great sport and that we are determined to show support when US goes for qualifications for the next World Cup.
July: A Time To Enjoy A Hot Dog!
Everyone knows the month of July is another month where we Americans can be extra patriotic! Of course July 4th is Independence day, but another holiday that not many know about is National Hot Dog Day on July 18th. Now, on the 4th of July we hear about, and for those of us daring enough to watch, we see Joey Chestnut and those wishing to challenge the Champ, shove over 60 hot dogs in their mouth over a short period of time. But if you like to casually enjoy your hot dogs you can do so on the 18th! And for those reading this who are local to the area, head on over to Heids and get an authentic hot dog, you won’t regret it! Nothing better than the summer months and a nice grilled hot dog.

November: Make Sure You Get Out There And Vote!
I’m going to make sure I keep this one short and sweet. On November 6th, 2018 the midterm elections will be taking place. I know that in the past couple of years, politics are not something that the people typically look forward to talking about. But this year, the midterm elections will have a significant impact on the political future of this country. If anything, use this time as an opportunity to exercise your American right to vote! Our founding fathers fought for this right, use it to its upmost potential in this years midterm elections.
December: All It Takes Is A Spoonful Of Sugar!
During the holidays people will take all they can get to help ease their holiday time stress. Some might say all it takes is a spoonful of sugar and that will help the medicine go down. Well, this coming December, you might be able to get just that. No, not an actual spoonful of sugar, but the woman who coined that phrase will be hitting the big-screen once again in December. Actress Emily Blunt will be stepping into the nearly perfect shoes that Julie Andrews had left for anyone willing to take on the role. Mary Poppins Returns will be open for all to see December 25th, 2018. Make sure you finish the year singing along with the cast of Mary Poppins, I’m sure her remedies will help with the holiday stress!
